Description

TFP is based on an understanding and focus on transference, an essential tool for understanding and transforming the patient’s relational dynamics. The aim of therapy being to promote a reorganization of these complex dynamics in order to improve functioning. Personality disorders are understood from the perspective of object relations theory. During this seminar, we will address the intermediate and advanced phases of therapy, which will allow us to explore the technical aspects of the interpretative process in greater depth. The intermediate phase focuses on an in-depth analysis of transference and object relations. During this phase, we will show how the patient begins to accept the therapist more readily and explore the defense mechanisms, issues of dependency, aggression, and affect management. This is characterized by alternating periods of progress and regression, or even negative therapeutic reaction. Avenues for intervention will be provided to overcome these difficulties. In the advanced phase, the patient becomes more emotionally autonomous and better regulates their behavior. Object relations are now more nuanced and integrated. The emphasis is on integrating changes, managing the mourning of idealizations, and consolidating identity, allowing the patient to fully assume responsibility for their life choices. We will therefore explore this phase, which prepares for the end of treatment.
