Aggression in Psychotherapy – Understanding and Intervention
French – Hybrid (Montreal, Canada)
Frank Yeomans, M.D., Ph.D.
Description
Seize a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of pathological forms of aggression and enhance your clinical interventions through the theoretical and technical principles of Transference-Focused Psychotherapy.
Knowing how to manage aggression in psychotherapy is a challenge for both patients and psychotherapists. Contemporary research shows that difficulty integrating aggressive experiences lies at the heart of the interpersonal and identity-related problems associated with personality disorders. A lack of integration of aggression into the personality leads to many consequences, such as chaotic relationships, impulsive and destructive acting out, or a profound sense of emptiness. In their relationship with the patient, psychotherapists are not immune to these manifestations, which may take the form of hostility, contempt, manipulation, or even sadism.
Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), developed by Otto F. Kernberg, is an empirically validated treatment that targets aggression through its emphasis on the therapeutic frame and the analysis of aggression in its various forms as they appear in the transference. Dr. Frank Yeomans will discuss the role of aggression in personality disorders and provide an introduction to the principles of TFP, supported by numerous examples from his clinical practice.
