Description

Personality Disorders

An in-depth examination of the phenomenology, characterology, underlying psychodynamics, and treatment options

Is it common for therapy with a patient to reach a “dead end,” lasting for years without visible results? Clinical practice shows that a superficial understanding of personality disorders can lead to a situation where the therapist doesn’t see any changes in what is considered effective treatment for a long time. Meanwhile, the patient may lose confidence in the therapy, increasing the likelihood of discontinuation.

Why does this happen? The reality is that personality disorders form a fundamental part of a psychotherapist’s knowledge, requiring detailed study, assimilation, and practice.

This fall, the Ukrainian Association of TFP (TFP-Ukraine) and the Ukrainian Institute for Personality Disorders Studies (UIPDS) will launch a program dedicated to the study of personality disorders. This highly beneficial program on psychotherapeutic work with various types of personality disorders will be conducted by Dr. Otto Kernberg, MD.

Learn more about the program

On September 14, 2024, the one-year training program in personality disorders will start. It consists of three consecutive modules that include the following topics:

Module I (September – November 2024):

  • Personality and identity, structural diagnosis
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Hysterical, histrionic, dependent personality disorders

Module II (December 2024 – March 2025):

  • Narcissistic personality disorder and hypomanic psychodynamics
  • Depressive-masochistic disorder and sado-masochistic psychodynamics
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Antisocial personality disorder

Module III (April-June 2025):

  • Schizoid, schizotypal, avoidant disorders
  • Paranoid disorder
  • Hypochondriacal disorder

The main focus of the program is to achieve the deepest understanding of the psyche based on psychoanalytic concepts. Dr. Otto Kernberg, a theorist, practitioner, and researcher with many decades of experience, will share with our participants all the details of identifying and working with the above personality disorders.
Throughout the program, participants will be able to ask Otto Kernberg questions and receive full and meaningful practice-oriented answers.

Dates for the first module:
September 14, October 19, November 16

Schedule for each workshop day

New York time: 8:45 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
London time: 1:45 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Kyiv time: 3:45 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Dates of the second and third modules
The exact dates of the second and third modules are being finalized. Classes will be held on Saturdays – one Saturday per month.

The entire program consists of ten one-day workshops (according to the topics mentioned above) – one per month from September 2024 to June 2025.

We have divided the ten one-day workshops into three modules – three seminars in the first module, four in the second, and three in the third. The fee for each module will be the same

Training format

Online meeting via Zoom platform.

We record our meetings and make them available for viewing in the personal account of each participant so that you can view the parts of the training that are particularly important to you.

What will be special in the program?

To illustrate the theoretical concepts, Otto Kernberg will conduct public clinical supervision for two supervisees throughout the program, each presenting their own case of prolonged psychotherapy.

This will provide you with practical experience in applying theoretical concepts to complex therapeutic cases. Participants will learn from observing the therapy’s progress and analyzing Otto Kernberg’s recommendations. During the discussions, you will have the opportunity to ask Dr. Kernberg questions about the supervision process.

Languages

We provide a comprehensive bilingual environment at our workshops, webinars, trainings so that participants fluent in both English and Ukrainian feel equally comfortable.

If the instructor uses slides, we ensure that bilingual slides are prepared, and if he/she uses videos, we subtitle them so that each participant feels equally comfortable learning. Audio broadcasting is done through separate audio channels, particularly in English and Ukrainian. Furthermore, participants in both languages find it equally convenient to ask questions and engage in discussions.

Join the training as this program is essential for all psychodynamic therapists, teaching you to understand personality disorders at the deepest level, which is the basis for appropriate therapeutic interventions.
