Description

Transference-Focused Psychotherapy

Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is a form of psychodynamic psychotherapy developed by Otto F. Kernberg and his team at the Personality Disorders Institute in New York. Technical modifications have been made to better address the particular difficulties presented by patients with personality disorders. Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of TFP, initially for the treatment of borderline personality disorder, but also for other personality disorders. This approach is part of empirically validated personality disorder-specific psychotherapies (E.B.P).

TFP was developed for the specific treatment of severe personality disorders, but its principles can be applied to various types of patients and in different care settings. These principles can help therapists feel more comfortable with patients considered difficult and facilitate their treatment, while demonstrating flexibility and creativity.

Training Overview: Fundamental Concepts

During this 2-day training, the fundamental principles of TFP are presented, starting with the typical psychopathological characteristics of personality disorders and their relational implications. The theoretical concepts underlying the understanding of the symptomatology of personality disorders will be explained using object relations theory.

Throughout the seminar, the theoretical concepts of TFP will be illustrated by clinical examples, with particular attention to the dynamics of object relations activated within the therapeutic relationship. Therapy session videos will allow participants to analyze relational dynamics and better integrate theory into practice. We will encourage exchanges between participants and facilitators so they can share their experiences with patients with personality disorders and explore intervention strategies.

This first module is a prerequisite that opens the door to continued participation in TFP training and supervision.
