Description

Over the past twenty years, research into traumatic experiences and their treatment has multiplied. Currently, therapeutic approaches to complex trauma rely mainly on exposure, EMDR, and other innovative methods. While these methods have proven effective, clinical experience shows that they do not work for all patients and can sometimes lead to a worsening of mental health.

Studies have shown that the long-term effects of a traumatic event depend on the nature of the event and its frequency, but also that early traumatic experiences, often linked to neglect and violence, they disrupt personality development and lead to difficulties with attachment and trust.

We observe that these relational issues are at the root of the great difficulties that some patients have in processing new information and thus in fully acquiring emotional regulation strategies. This is why complex trauma should first be examined and treated from a relational perspective. Initially, the stabilization phase allows a therapeutic relationship to be established, focused on setting boundaries. Next, relational ruptures with the therapist are explored, with a view to reharmonizing the relationship. In this therapeutic process, the reflexive function and attachment are identified.Psychotraumatologists and supervisors in Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), Ms. Hopchet and Ms. Liard will guide participants in an in-depth clinical reflection on the therapeutic approach to adopt in different situations. Their approach will highlight the complexity of clinical choices, beyond symptomatic or behavioral manifestations alone, by integrating relational issues, transference, countertransference, and reflective capacities.
